Michael Jackson’s documentary, This Is It, did so well this weekend that Sony Pictures has decided to keep it in theaters a few more weeks.
The Associated Press reports that This Is It pulled in $101 million worldwide since its premiere last week. It snagged $21.3 million over the weekend in the U.S. alone, making Michael the king of the box office.
The film, which also earned $10.4 million in Japan, follows Michael as he prepared for his planned 50-show run at London’s O2 arena. It earned about $7.6 million in the U.K.
With the outstanding box office return that This Is It has earned in under a week, has more than paid back the $60 million that Sony paid for the distribution rights. Originally This Is It was only supposed to be in theaters for two weeks, but now the studio has decided to extend its run through Thanksgiving weekend, one of the busiest weekend for theaters.
