Brandy opens up about fake marriage

Years after her first marriage was revealed as a hoax, Brandy Norwood is hoping to walk down the aisle for real and is happy her fans now know who she really is.

“I felt like I had to be dishonest about that because of the image I was trying to portray at that time,” Brandy admitted to the DJs of Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club.”

In 2002, Brandy starred in her own MTV reality series, “Brandy: Special Delivery,” in which she chronicled the days leading up to the birth of her daughter, Sy’rai. While Brandy pretended to be married to former producer Robert Smith, in actuality, the two weren’t wed.

Brandy explained that she was attempting to protect her image and be “perfect” at that time. That’s something she doesn’t worry about now, though.

“I love that I can be transparent. I can just be honest and be myself. In that time, I didn’t know that, and clearly, whoever was around me didn’t know that,” said Brandy.

Though her first “marriage” wasn’t real, Brandy’s expecting to exchange vows with boyfriend Ryan Press soon.

“I’m 33. It’s time to be married for real this time,” she said. “It’s a great thing when you’re in love with someone and you’re connected. You want to share your life with that person.”

Brandy and Ryan aren’t officially engaged yet, but the singer is confident that a ring is coming soon.

“I know the ring is coming,” said Brandy, who hasn’t decided what type of wedding ceremony she wants yet. “I think I’ll know when I get my ring.”

While LaLa Anthony, Kim Kardashian, Niecy Nash and others have shared their wedding planning with TV viewers, Brandy fans might not get the privilege. The singer said she’s done with that.

“Reality for me, just wasn’t the business. Period,” she said.

Brandy, who also starred in VH1’s “A Family Business,” is glad she decided to leave reality TV and focus on music.

“That’s where it is for me. I love it. It’s the best way I can express myself. It comes natural for me,” said Brandy, whose single, “Put It Down,” has soared to the top of the music charts.

“I say this humbly, but it’s really an amazing body of work,” Brandy said about her upcoming Two Eleven project. “It feels like my first album.”
