Brandy Norwood admits she’s not the same person fans first met almost 20 years ago when she first came on the scene…or even 10 years ago.
“I think I’m a bit smarter now. I’m a better mother, and I’m a little bit more patient in my life now. I was all over the place at 23 with a baby,” said Brandy who’s now 33.
Brandy’s daughter, Sy’rai, is 10 now and while Brandy was disappointed in the apparent disinterest in her last two albums, her time away from the music business did allow quality time for the mother and daughter.
“I’ve had a lot of time to raise her and spend quality time with her,” Brandy told Wendy Williams. “She really wants to be with me everywhere I go.”
So while many working moms worry about balancing career and family, Brandy said she’s grateful she had time to be with Sy’rai.
“God has been great to me. I’ve gone through so much in my life. So much strength has come from the things that I’ve experienced, and I have something to share with the people who are going through the same things in their life,” she said. “I can be a better example to my daughter.”
Brandy’s life hasn’t been a completely open book, but fans are familiar with some of her struggles including her fight to overcome an eating disorder, her pregnancy and subsequent public marriage hoax and most recently the loss of her mentor, Whitney Houston.
Brandy, whose new album Two Eleven immortalizes the date on which Whitney passed, shared the iconic singer’s last words to her mentee and friend.
“She told me that I’m a class act and nobody can be you. So, stop trying to be other people. Just embrace you, and you’ll be fine,” Brandy said.
