Mary J. Blige is joining Hollywood heavy hitters Angela Bassett and Ruby Dee in the upcoming Lifetime movie, “Betty and Coretta.”
The film, scheduled to premiere in February during Black History Month, examines the relationship between the wives of two legendary Civil Rights-era leaders after the deaths of their husbands.
Oscar nominee Angela will portray Coretta Scott King and Mary takes on the role of Betty Shabazz. Ironically, it was Angela who portrayed Shabazz in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X biopic.
Ruby Dee will appear as a “historical witness” and narrator, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Malik Yoba will play Martin Luther King, Jr. and Wood Harris will take on the role of Malcolm X.
Mary said stepping into the lives of two women during a time when their lives were torn apart by tragedy was a bit taxing.
“Right now it’s a little sad, but I’m enjoying it,” she told Billboard in September. “It’s the death of Malcolm, the death of Martin and the women trying to be strong and get through it.”
