Willow Smith will no longer star in the remake of Annie because she’s a little too old to play the orphan.
Deadline.com reports that producers are now looking for a replacement to take on the role of Annie in a planned update of the musical.
When pre-production for Annie started three years ago, Willow was of the appropriate age to play Annie at just 9 years old. Now that she’s turned 12, she’s aged out of the role.
Just because Willow’s out of the picture, doesn’t mean her parents are. According to Deadline Will and Jada Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment is still producing the film. They’ve even brought Jay-Z, who signed Willow to Roc Nation, onboard for the project.
“For Marcy Media’s first foray into film, we couldn’t ask for better partners and mentors than Overbrook Entertainment. We are excited to work with Will Gluck and Sony Pictures Entertainment," Hov said in a statement to Deadline.
And Jay’s got a little history with the musical, as one of it’s song provided the beat for one of his biggest hits to date. "My well-known affinity for the classic ‘Hard Knock Life’ makes Annie a natural vehicle to lead us into the world of the cinema," said Jay.
Annie starts shooting this fall, but it’s not clear yet who will be taking on the title role. However, Will Gluck (Easy A and Friends With Benefits) has been picked to direct the film.
In the meantime, it looks like Jay-Z has to gear up for a performance next weekend. Get the deets when you flip through Daily Buzz 2.1.13 below!
