The calendar says February, the sun’s shining and we sincerely hope that we’ve seen the season’s last snowfall, so you know what that means. Spring shopping! This spring we’ve noticed the return of the ubiquitous summer Maxi Dress, an even bigger dependence on plaid and much more emphasis on different shapes, like off the shoulder, fringe and slouchy sweaters. Check out a sampling of next season’s hottest looks.
The boyfriend cardigan ($54, Gap)
Slouchy, university-style cardigans will be just one of the many ways to purvey that nerdy/cool graduate student look this spring. We love the bright colors in this sweater (currently on sale) and could see it paired with denim shorts and a tank top on a breezy spring day.
BDG Lightweight Flannel Dress (58, Urban Outfitters)
If you thought that flannel died with Kurt Cobain, think again. A short, comfy flannel dress is a great investment for the spring since you can easily pair it with tights for a cooler day or go bare-legs and sandals when it’s warmer out.
Ruffled Jersey Dress ($298, Marc by Marc Jacobs)
Remember that tattered-looking dress Taraji P. Henson rocked at this year’s Golden Globes? Turns out, modified versions of it are everywhere this season. This ruffled dress is a lot less busy than Taraji’s multi-colored, multi-length gown, so we’re kind of feeling it. Plus the jersey fabric will make it really comfortable and virtually immune to wrinkles.
The Grecian Dress ($143, Nightcap Clothing)
“Jesus sandals,” forehead headbands, flowy dresses, the Grecian goddess look is in full effect for this spring. We like this white, sort-of one shoulder dress, but realize that it may blend one too many trends for the average person. But for that person that’s really into asymmetrical cuts, it’s pretty perfect.
Pocket Vest ($14.99, Charlotte Russe)
Vests are a really easy way to dress up an outfit, so we’re excited to see so many of them around this spring. This dark brown version has a utilitarian look to it, what with the military-like wrinkled cotton and official-looking gold buttons. Throw it over an ultra-girly dress for a nice contrast or pair it with a simple jeans and tee look.
Urban Renewal Oversized Flannel Shirt ($38, Urban Outfitters)
We told you the flannel look was big, didn’t we? This look is full-on hipster with the flannel, cut-off shorts and sheer tights, but don’t feel like you have to go all out to make the shirt look good. Wear it as a jacket over a tee and mini combo or with jeans and calf-length boots.
Jersey Maxi Dress ($29.59, Old Navy)
An essential part of every woman’s wardrobe last summer, it’s no less popular this spring. We’re pretty happy about it since these dresses are notoriously easy to wear, no matter your shape. For spring, pair it with a cardigan.
Stella Cuff Short ($49.50, Express)
Shorts are really huge this spring, whether this more trendy, dark wash variety or a more simple true-blue denim. Wear them with tights and boots on cooler days or pair with jersey tanks and cardigans for warmer times.
Viviana Skirt ($39.50, delia’s)
Short, voluminous skirts like this one can look intimidating, but are actually really easy to wear. The trick is getting the length right (a couple of inches above your knee) and going for more form-fitting pieces on top, like a tank or slim-fit tee. The yellow in this skirt is also very right-now.
