TV One is kicking off a new season of it’s acclaimed documentary series, “Unsung,” tonight.

This season features the incredible untold stories of Rose Royce, Sylvester, Stacy Lattisaw and the Bar-Kays. If you don’t know who they are, tune in because you are about to get schooled.

The new season of “Unsung,” debuting tonight on TV One at 9 p.m., starts off telling the story of Rose Royce, who released the title track for the Car Wash soundtrack. With classics like “I Wanna Get Next To You” and “I’m Going Down, “ and three platinum albums to their name, the group had the makings of a funk music powerhouse.  Adding to their cache was the fact that they were nurtured by Motown producer Norman Whitfield, who also worked with the likes of Marvin Gaye and the Temptations.

Rose Royce was just beginning to carve out its name in music history when they were struck by the down side of fast fame. You can hear more of their story tonight.

Next up is Sylvester the King and Queen of Disco all rolled up into one spectacular performer. He brought drag into the spotlight years before RuPaul told us how to work! Performing with theater troupes and music groups, just to list a few of his endeavors, Sylvester was determined to reach stardom on his own terms as an openly gay Black man.

“He was content to be himself, and he didn’t want to be anything but who he was,” said Martha Wash of Weather Girls fame, who used to sing backup for him. She’s just one of the people speaking on the now-deceased artist’s behalf next week.

See why his star started fading before his time when you watch “Unsung” on March 29 at 9 p.m. on TV One.

Child actress and recording star Stacy Lattisaw will tell her story on April 12. This season of “Unsung” will be rounded out on April 19 with an in-depth look at hitmakers  the Bar-Kays, whose career is still going strong after 40 years.
