ACORN, a well-known community organization group, has announced that it will be ceasing operations.

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now released a statement Monday revealing that it had agreed on steps to shut down state offices and field affiliates by April 1.

CNN reports that ACORN, which has been in operation for 40 years, buckled under the weight of impending bankruptcy and a decline in revenues was credited in the decision to shut down.

"ACORN’s members have a great deal to be proud of,” the statement read, “from promoting homeownership to helping rebuild New Orleans, from raising wages to winning safer streets, from training community leaders to promoting voter participation — ACORN members have worked hard to create stronger communities, a more inclusive democracy and a more just nation,"

The organization also came under scrutiny last year when a secretly recorded video of conservative activists posing as a pimp and his prostitute was released. In the clip, the pair was shown getting advice from ACORN employees about how to set up a prostitution ring while avoiding suspicion from the IRS.

As a result Congressional funding to ACORN was cut off, and the employees seen in the video were fired. According to ACORN’s
Web site, the organization was cleared of criminal wrongdoing in that case earlier this month.
