Idris Elba is getting his own crime drama across the pond with “Luther” on BBC One.
Idris, who will star alongside Zoe Saldana in The Losers, is set to play the title role in the six-part series, the British network has announced. The character is a brilliant homicide detective who can’t always get a handle on the “dangerous violence of his passions.”
It’s a part that Idris thinks he can really sink his teeth into.
"I’m really excited about playing Luther. He’s a challenging and exciting character because he’s so complex,” said Idris “While he’s capable of great kindness and loyalty, sometimes he steps over the edge of madness – simmering with anger and rage."
Show creator Neil Cross added,"It’s an intense psychological thriller which examines not only human depravity but the complex nature of love and how it’s often this – our finest attribute – that leads us into darkness."
From that we envision that “Luther” could look a lot like a masterful mix of “Law and Order” and “Dexter.” Just our best guess.
“Luther” begins shooting this fall, and it’s slated to premiere next year on BBC One. There’s no word on when, or if, the show will air on BBC America.
