Iron Man 2 dominated at box offices all over the world this weekend, topping $327 million in ticket sales.
The Iron Man sequel, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle, took in $133.6 over Mother’s Day weekend—and that’s just in the U.S. alone!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel movie has also earned $194 millon overseas since its international debut.
S2S saw the movie over the weekend, and we completely nerded out! In our opinion this was one of the few summer sequels that was just as good as the original.
Robert proved once again that he was the perfect choice to play billionaire playboy-tech wiz Tony Stark. He’s cocky, confident and cool—the kind of jerk you just can’t help but like. And we were impressed with Don Cheadle’s turn as Lt. Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes. We’re not fond of cast changes, but Don did the part justice as he took over for Terrence Howard. And having Samuel L. Jackson play Shield boss Nick Fury was a stroke of genius!
While we love a good fight scene, many summer movies tend to drag out a scrap a little too long for our taste. But director Jon Favreau, the digital artists and animators struck a great balance this time around. The battles were long enough to hold our attention, but not so long that we started checking our text messages in the theater.
Our favorite fight scene came during Tony’s birthday party. We won’t ruin it for you, but suffice it to say the scene was punctuated with almost cartoonish sound effects and a soundtrack that we’re trying to add our iTunes playlist.
Then there’s the plot. Where many sequels tend to lack something in the script, Iron Man 2 picked up at a good place and featured a believable character progression. That’s not to say it wasn’t without it plot holes, though.
Overall, we give Iron Man 2 an A-, crediting extra points for the post-credits teaser scene. Don’t know what we’re talking about? S2S strongly advises that when watching a movie based on any Marvel comic series, you stick around after the credits to find out what Marvel mastermind Stan Lee has coming down the pipeline for film fanatics.
