Just a week after spitting a racial slur nearly a dozen times live on air, Laura Schlessinger is signing off.

The talk radio host got into a heated discussion about racism with a listener last week. The caller, a Black woman married to a White man, came to Dr. Laura seeking advice on how to deal with relatives, whom she feels are bigoted.

During the exchange Dr. Laura said the n-word 11 times. The comments set off of a firestorm of criticism for her, and last night she announced told “Larry King Live” that she will not try to renew her program next year.

“My contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year, and I’ve made the decision not to do radio anywhere,” she said.

"The reason is, I want to regain my First Amendment rights," she continued. "I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that."

Dr. Laura insists that the decision to walk away is entirely hers and that she won’t be out of the media business for long. “I’m not retiring, I’m not quitting,” she assured. “I feel energized, actually stronger and freer to say the things I believe need to be said.”
