As an expression of respect for the lives lost Saturday in Tucson, President Barack Obama requested a moment of silence today and for flags to be flown at half-staff until January 14.
“Tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST, I call on Americans to observe a moment of silence to honor the innocent victims of the senseless tragedy in Tucson, Arizona, including those still fighting for their lives. It will be a time for us to come together as a nation in prayer or reflection, keeping the victims and their families closely at heart," President Obama said on Sunday in a release.
On Saturday, six people were fatally wounded when a gunman opened fire in front of a grocery store, injuring a total of 19 victims, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who is believed to be the shooter’s primary target. Congresswoman Giffords is currently in a medically induced coma, but doctors said they are “encouraged” that she will recover.
Jared Loughner, 22, is the suspected gunman and is due to appear in court today.
