It’s raining, it’s pouring…okay we don’t know the rest of the song, but we do know that the rain can really dampen a girl’s swag. After all, who really feels like ruining a good pair of shoes in a soggy puddle? But with a few rainy day essentials (hint: more than just an umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh), you’ll be singing in the rain. Or at least able to function.

The umbrella: Umbrellas are your first line of defense against wet hair and damp clothes (duh), so pick a good one. Both this fun Elements Clear Bubble Umbrella ($16.99, Target) and the more subdued black and white version ($19.99, Target) are cool, cheap options.

The hat: The York hat ($40, Wallaroo) is a classic bucket rain hat in versatile neutral colors. At 40 bucks, it’s an inexpensive investment.

The coat: Sunshine yellow is much-appreciated when torrential rains are dousing the city. It’s also a classic color for raincoats, so we loved this bright Button-Front Raincoat ($19.75, Old Navy). We also like the more sophisticated and practical (look how cute the sleeves are when rolled up!) City Style Anorak ($27.47, New York & Company).

The boots: There are roughly two classes of rain boot: completely whimsical (see this yellow and blue Tall Rain Boot [$17.99, Old Navy] or the Moov Boot [approx. $151, Moov]) or nearly chic enough to wear when it’s not raining (nearly, not quite). For that category we’re loving the Riding Rainboots ($34.99, Target).
