The longest running drama on TV, “Guiding Light”, is about to go out after a 72-year run.
The soap started out as a radio show on NBC radio in 1937, and the episodes were only 15 minutes long. CBS picked up the show in 1952 and put it on television, but the episodes were still just 15 minutes at that point. The show finally became an hour-long drama in 1977.
The history making soap opera has earned 69 Daytime Emmys.
"No show in daytime or prime time, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years as ‘Guiding Light,’" said CBS Senior Vice President of Daytime Programs Barbara Bloom. "We thank the cast, crew and producers – past and present – who delivered this entertainment institution, the beloved characters and the time-honored stories to our audience every day for seven decades. It’s been a privilege to work with such an extraordinarily talented group of people."
Check your local listings and tune in to CBS on Friday September 18 to see “Guiding Light” fade out on last time.
