Quvenzhané Wallis will be taking over for Willow Smith in the remake of Annie!
Columbia Pictures announce Sunday that Quvenzhané, who became the youngest Oscar nominee for Best Actress, would be playing the title role in Annie. It was revealed last month that Willow had aged out of the role, and she wanted to take some time to “be 12.”
The studio is thrilled to have picked up Quvenzhané, who starred in Beasts of the Southern Wild, for the movie.
“With the recent Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star, and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star,”Columbia Pictures President of Production Hannah Minghella said in a statement.
Hannah added, “She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”
People.com reports that when asked whether she can sing, Quvenzhané shyly said, “I guess.”
