Kelly Rowland is reflecting on her relationship with Mathew Knowles as she promotes her new single.
Kelly dropped by Power 105.1′s “The Breakfast Club” to hype her Lil Wayne collaboration “Motivation.” While she was there, she chatted it up with show hosts on topics ranging from interracial dating to America’s expanding musical tastes.
But the thing that caught everyone’s attention was what she had to say about Mathew. She broke their professional relationship in January 2009, years before his daughter Beyoncé Knowles dropped him. Although he no longer handles her career, Kelly still has a lot of love for the man that helped to launch her music career.
“I’m still very supportive of Mathew,” Kelly said. “I’ve been supportive of him since day one. He’s done great with Destiny’s Child. Look what he did. He definitely set us up to have great careers, so we’re not mad at that at all and I wish him the best.”
And she’s not getting cocky about being the first member of Destiny’s Child to leave Mathew behind, either. Kelly didn’t say whether Bey’s move to drop her dad as manager came as a shock, but she backs her friend’s choice.
“Above anything we support each other. It’s just growing up,” said Kelly. “I think that when you grow up, you’re allowed to make decisions on your own. And I support every decision Beyoncé, Michelle [Williams] and Solange [Knowles]–whatever decision they make, I’m going to be supportive and completely behind them.”
Since cutting Mathew from her team, Kelly has enjoyed a lot of success with dance music. But, in the clip below, find out why she’s still not leaving urban music behind.
