White House denies talking to Jay-Z about Cuba trip
Jay-Z’s new track had more than just hip-hop heads talking. When “Open Letter” dropped yesterday, Hov made mention of President Barack Obama, and that immediately made the political world wonder if he’d chatted with the rapper.
It’s no secret that the Carters and the Obamas are very close and share a mutual admiration, but The White House wasted no time nipping that speculation of a private chat in the bud. “It’s a song,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters. “The President did not communicate with Jay-Z over this trip.”
When a reporter brought up the question, it seemed that most people at the press conference were hard pressed to take it seriously. Some even laughed before the press secretary reminded reporters that it is the U.S. Department of the Treasury that provides travel clearance.
