Shaunie O’Neal has hinted that there might be some friction between the returning “Basketball Wives” cast members and newcomer Meeka Claxton.
Unlike castmates Evelyn Lozada, Jennifer Williams, Tami Roman and Royce Reed, Shaunie had little to do with the addition of Meeka to the show’s roster.
“None of us knew Meeka before the show. She reached out to production. She showed a lot of interest and stayed real persistent… It was different to have somebody reaching out that I don’t know at all. She seemed excited about it. So, we thought, ‘What the heck,’” said executive producer Shaunie O’Neal, who is not at all opposed to the idea of new women joining the cast.
“I always said that I would want to have a new face every season. I don’t know if that would work, or if it’s even necessary,” she told Sister 2 Sister.
In the case of Tami Roman, who joined the cast for season 2, the formula worked. It remains to be seen how it all comes together for Meeka.
Shaunie didn’t seek the newcomer out, but now that Meeka is part of the series, the returning cast members are trying to make the best of things.
“You’re coming into a bunch of ladies who already have relationships: good or bad. That’s a difficult thing,” Shaunie explained.
Of course, that response begged the question: Is Meeka getting along with her fellow castmates?
“I wouldn’t say she’s getting along. I would definitely not say that,” Shaunie chuckled. “Trying to please everybody can get you in trouble. It’s not working out quite like she had planned.”
Things aren’t exactly working out the way Shaunie planned either. She’d initially conceptualized the show as something to highlight “ladies who had something going on outside their husbands,” she said.
Although the show has morphed into something else, Shaunie said she is still satisfied with what has resulted.
“I’m okay with the success of the show. I’m okay with something that—it being my first project ever, that I ever did—I’m really proud of the success,” she said.
