Mariah Carey has no problem admitting that she likes being the center of attention, and that’s part of why things didn’t work out on “American Idol.”

Mariah and her champagne flute sat down for a candid chat with Angie Martinez for a candid chat, where she admitted that she didn’t expect Nicki Minaj to be joining her on the judges’ panel for “Idol.”

After just one season on the show, Mariah was ready to leave the singing competition in the dust and never look book. “Honestly, I hated it,” Mariah told Angie. “I thought it was going to be a three-person panel. They gave me a nice dangling monetary moment, and I was just like, ‘Okay. Randy Jackson will be there; I’ve known him forever. He used to play bass for me. Like, this isn’t a big deal. This will be nothing.’

She continued, “But it wasn’t that. It was like going to work every day in hell with Satan.”

Before Angie could ask whether she was comparing Nicki to the devil, Mariah shrugged off her comment with a chuckle. “I’m just playing. It didn’t affect me that much. I just…I was disappointed,” she said.

Her co-stars weren’t the only thing that rubbed Mariah the wrong way on “American Idol.” She wished the voting about who gets to say was a little more reflective of the contestants ability and less like a popularity contest.

“You know what I loved? I loved the contestants,” Mariah stated, adding that she doesn’t believe the most talented contendors necessarily got a fair shot at the title. “Some of them that were so good—and also really good people, you could tell—it was disappointing when [the judges] would, for political reasons, not put people through.”

And it’s not likely that Mariah will be joining any other judging panels on reality TV, either. Her time on “American Idol” made her appreciate the freedom she has in her career even more. Mariah resolved, “I like being in the studio better and going on my own tours, etc., so we’re going back to that.”
