Oprah sounds off on ‘Newsweek’
Thu, 06/04/2009 - 14:42 — Anonymous
Oprah Winfrey is having her say about an article in Newsweek that said she was dispensing bad health advice.
The magazine took her to task for backing guests on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” who talk about their views on modern medicine. For example, Jenny McCarthy said she discouraged giving kids their shots because her own child developed autism after a vaccination. Another guest suggested that bad energy was the cause of thyroid dysfunction—and that was a physician!
Oprah released a statement today saying that she expects her fans to know better than to just blindly follow anything that is said on her set.
"For 23 years, my show has presented thousands of topics that reflect the human experience, including doctors' medical advice and personal health stories that have prompted conversations between our audience members and their health care providers," O stated. "I trust the viewers, and I know that they are smart and discerning enough to seek out medical opinions to determine what may be best for them."
Apparently, one such watcher didn’t get that memo. An anonymous blogger at LivingOprah.com said she followed the word of O for a solid year.
“I had mixed results from the health guidance I learned on Oprah's show and there were a couple items that conflicted with my own doctor's guidance,” she said. “My doc always shrugged at how many supplements I knocked back in 2008, for instance.”
