Harmful bacteria like salmonella and E. coli are behind recent food recalls. Dunkin' Donuts stopped selling their Dunkaccino (a coffee/hot chocolate blend) and hot chocolate drinks after salmonella was discovered at their suppliers' facilities.

According to Nation's Restaurant News, Planview Milk Products Cooperative, the supplier of several of Dunkin' Donuts' products, voluntarily pulled several products after discovering the bacteria. No illnesses have resulted from the contamination and Dunkin' Donuts has expressed their desire to get the drinks back on the menu soon.

More food recalls have recently been reported, according to YumSugar. Nestle, the company behind everything from Perrier to Purina, recently recalled 30,000 cases of Toll House cookie dough from grocery store shelves after traces of E.coli were discovered, and thought to be the cause of dozens of illnesses.

Nearly 400,000 pounds of beef was also subject to the bacteria E.coli recently, resulting in 12 people ending up in the hospital.

The recent contaminations, as well as the recall spree that took place in March (spinach, milk, peanut butter and other common foods were all recalled), shine a light on food safety, which is mainly regulated by the FDA. President Obama addressed the issue then, and said that "Food safety is something I take seriously, not just as your President, but as a parent. Protecting the safety of our food and drugs is one of the most fundamental responsibilities government has."
