Emmet Till’s casket heads to Smithsonian

Emmet Till’s original casket will be put on display in the Smithsonian after it was found rusting in a cemetery shed.

Emmet Till’s original casket will be put on display in the Smithsonian.
The Associated Press reports that The glass-topped coffin is headed to the museum to be preserved as part of American history. This news comes exactly 54 years after he was lynched in Mississippi for whistling at a White woman. The men responsible for Emmett’s death were never convicted.
"Part of the responsibility of a national museum is to help people to remember,” said Lonnie Bunch, who heads the Smithsonian’s planned National Museum of African American History and Culture, “and through this donation we will ensure that future generations will remember how the death of a child, a mother's courage, helped to transform America."
The casket was found rusting in a shed at Burr Oak Cemetery in suburban Chicago. It was turned up during an investigation into the illegal resale of burial plots at the facility. More than 300 bodies were found disinterred and tossed into a mass grave.
In 2005, Emmett had been dug up for a new investigation into his death and he was re-buried in a new casket.
