One African country isn’t pleased with how its people were portrayed in District 9 and is calling to have it banned from the big screen.
 
The Associated Press reports that Information Minister Dora Akunyili has asked theaters to stop show District 9 because it depicts Nigerians as savage thugs that are prone to cannibalism (in one scene a gang leader tries to eat another man's arm).
 
The official is calling on Sony to apologize for the portrayal and she wants the studio to cut the gangsters out of the film, which is set in South Africa. And, most of all, she wants the main Nigerian villain’s name, Obesandjo, to be edited out of District 9 since it sounds very similar Olusegun Obasanjo, the name of a former Nigerian president.
 
But the movie isn’t just drawing fire from Nigeria’s government, it’s also alienated Nigerian audiences in the United States. The movie has inspired harsh criticisms from users on YouTube and others on social networking sites like Facebook, which has a group called Nigerians Offended by District 9.
