Mike Tyson opens up to ‘Oprah’
Tue, 10/13/2009 - 12:40 — Anonymous
Mike Tyson got candidly honest with Oprah Winfrey while sitting down for an in-depth interview with her.
“Iron” Mike Tyson showed his softer side on yesterday’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” talking about everything from fatherhood to love to his infamous fight with Evander Holyfield.
Mike explained to Oprah that when he got into the ring he was indifferent about his competition and their well-being. The former heavyweight champion said that, at the time, he didn’t feel bad about biting Evander’s ears.
“It’s doesn’t make no excuse for what happened, but I was just in a rage. I wanted to inflict so much pain on him,” Michael recalled. “I was just pissed off that he was such a great fighter.”
Furthermore, he admits that his apology to his fellow contender was insincere. In fact, he was offended that he publically had to say he was sorry. Instead, he’d rather have just talked it out with Evander one-on-one.
Michael also spoke on his tumultuous marriage to actress Robin Givens, which, he confirmed, was an abusive relationship. However, he charges that his ex-wife was anything but a victim in that situation.
“I don’t think she’s to blame,” Michael told Oprah. “Robin is a very tough woman. She’s very tough, and she can be very mean as well. She’s not no easy push over.”
The violent details of their marriage hit the public during a memorable interview with Barbara Walters, where Robin sat beside Michael as she spoke on his anger issues to the journalist.
“I truly wanted to sock her,” Mike said, garnering chuckles from the audience. We’re not sure if that was intended, though. We don’t really see anything funny about that statement.
Michael said that he harbors no hard feelings for Robin since the breakup of their marriage, but he dodged answering whether he still keeps in touch with her.
