Dr. King's daughter up for civil rights leadership position
Thu, 10/29/2009 - 10:06 — whitney
The Rev. Bernice King, youngest daughter of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is in line to ascend to president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), a group that her father founded over 50 years ago.
The SCLC has had seven presidents in its history, including Dr. King and Bernice's brother Martin Luther King III, and Bernice, who is running against Civil Rights Activist Judge WendellGriffen , would be the first woman if she is elected. According to its Web site, the group currently operates two programs: Tobacco-free kids and voter education.
NPR reports that Bernard Lafayette, one of 40 of the SCLC's board members said, "We need a person who has a national presence and a national voice," while Bernice told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that leading the SCLC is "a destiny call."
Bernice's competitor, Wendell, was the first Black lawyer to work for a major Arkansas law firm and a former chair for former Arkansas Governor William Clinton.
The SCLC will make its decision later on today.
