Run-DMC won’t rock the mic at induction
Fri, 04/03/2009 - 11:52 — Anonymous
Run-DMC has announced that they will not be performing at the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this weekend.
Although he’s trilled about the honor, DMC told MTV News earlier this week that him and Rev. Run won’t perform because it just wouldn’t be the same show without the late Jam Master Jay.
“For me, I tell people, 'Do you want to see me and Run running around without Jay?'" he said. "They tell me I could get Grandmaster Flash [to fill in]. But I can get any DJ in the world if I want. It wouldn't be right. I can't replace my drummer."
This isn’t just a stance they’ve taken for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The surviving members of Run-DMC decided they would never perform again as a group after Jay was murdered back in 2002.
Inductees usually take the stage at their ceremonies as a treat for the attendees. This time, however, the audience will be shown a video tribute.
In the meantime, DMC is going to be busy writing up an acceptance speech. He told MTV News that event reps freaked him out with a little bit of advice.
"They said, 'You have all the time in the world. We don't want you to be too long, but we don't want you to be too short,'" DMC said with a laugh. "I was gonna freestyle it. But then they scared me again with, 'Make sure you get it right, because you only get to do this once.'"
Their induction is well-deserved, and the group is definitely familiar with Rock music. Their most notable rap-rock collabo was “Walk This Way,” where they teamed up with Aerosmith.
However, the guys never needed any help when it came to proving that they are “The Kings of Rock.”
