Iman: 'Michelle Obama is not a great beauty'

    Tue, 05/19/2009 - 10:13 — whitney

Iman, the exotic, gazelle-like supermodel to whom all models of color aspire to, recently spoke candidly to Parade magazine about the first Black first lady.

She told the reporter that, “Mrs. Obama is not a great beauty, but she is so interesting-looking and so bright. That will always take you farther.”

Perhaps thinking of her own, long career in the fashion and beauty industry, Iman continued with, “When you’re a great beauty, it’s always downhill for you. If you’re someone like Mrs. Obama, you just get better with age.”

We're not sure how we feel about this. While we obviously greatly respect both women, we wonder why the question of Michelle's beauty even comes up? When the U.S. elects it's first female prez, will we be having these same conversations about the looks and dress of her husband?

Plus the entire quote just seemed to smack of bitterness, which is so not like the Iman that we know and love.

Iman said Mrs. Obama is no great beauty

We as African American women need to stop tearing each other down to make our self feel better. Iman has had a great career as one of the first african american high fashion models in the industry and no one is taking that away from her. Iman, should be happy for the first lady like we were happy for her and still are.

    I agree

It just really seemed like Iman was a little jealous of all the attention Michelle is getting right now. No one's ever going to be able to take away from Iman's accomplishments, so she really needs to sit down and shut up.
