2. Beyoncé can’t dodge $100 million lawsuit
Beyoncé may get called into court! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gate Five Gaming has been given the green light to sue the diva for backing out of a deal for a dance video game.
Back in April, Bey was denied a motion for summary judgment in the $100 million suit from Gate Five Gaming. The singer then sought an appeal to get a second opinion on the case. Last Thursday the appellate court backed up the initial ruling.
Gate Five is seeking $100 million from Bey, who had signed a deal to do a motion-driven game called "Starpower: Beyoncé."
Although the contact had a termination clause stipulating that Bey could back out if certain financing was not in place by a certain date, the company claims that she didn’t quit until after it had spent $6.7 million on the game. A financier that would have contributed $19.2 million had also been secured. That’s when Bey exercised her out clause, allegedly costing Gate Five "hundreds of millions of dollars in profits that Gate Five could have realized if she had honored the Agreement."
According to the ruling, it is not clear whether Bey had intended to forgo her right to back out. The appellate court pointed out that she never objected to a loan for the game as it was closing.
