2. Drake wants his props
Even if he didn’t invent the word, rapper Drake did help make it popular. The Take Care artist brought YOLO = You Only Live Once to the masses with his 2011 song, "The Motto," and he wants the credit.
The four-letter acronym has been popping up all over hats, shirts and other clothing, and Drake tweeted that he would like his cut.
"Walgreens….you gotta either chill or cut the cheque," tweeted the Young Money artist, and he ‘s not one to discriminate against bargain stores. Drake’s going after Macy’s, too.
According to KnowYourMeme.com, Drake isn’t the first one to utter the phrase in popular culture. Apparently, Adam Mesh from the TV series, "The Average Joe," used the phrase on air in 2003 and was the first to have it emblazoned on clothing.
However, Adam doesn’t seem too interested in receiving a cut from the YOLO merchandise these days.
He recently tweeted: "When I created the word it was meant as inspiration to live life to the fullest. Disappointed in current use. I have moved on."
Maybe Adam’s not a rap fan.
