3. Jada Pinkett Smith: ‘Marriage should not be enslavement’
Jada Pinkett Smith isn’t trying to have her love locked down. The former "Hawthorne" stare shared on her Facebook page that she feels marriage isn’t supposed to be something restrictive. She spoke on people feeling captive to their love.
"Marriage should not feel like enslavement," she wrote in one entry before going on to write about familial relationships. "Motherhood should not feel like enslavement. Fatherhood should not feel like enslavement. Being a child should not mean you have no rights of any kind."
Jada added, "Loving of any kind should not feel like a ball and chain. Let’s check in on our lives and make sure we are not creating psychological chains of slavery in our own homes."
In another post titled "Dream stealers," Jada also talked about the danger of cultivating resentment among the people you care about by forcing them to choose between you and their ambitions.
"I think one of the worst atrocities we can commit on people we say we love is to steal their dreams through our overbearing expectations. Whether we steal dreams consciously or unconsciously, it renders the same effect…RESENTMENT," Jada wrote. "Someone we say we love should NEVER be forced to choose having your love and support over having their dreams. There is a way to have BOTH."
The actress also expressed the notion that people should only ever look to nurture their loves ones’ dreams, and that it doesn’t have to come at the cost of your own happiness.
She advised, "BUILD on your dreams and on the dreams of those you love…TODAY!"
