4. NAACP supports gay marriage
The NAACP is backing President Barack Obama’s stance on gay marriage.
During a meeting of its board of directors, the organization has passed a resolution backing same sex unions as a civil right. The board stated that is against any policy that “seeks to codify discrimination or hatred into the law or to remove the constitutional rights of LGBT citizens.”
“Civil marriage is a civil right and a matter of civil law,” NAACP president and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous said in a statement. “The NAACP’s support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution and equal protection of all people.”
